Health and Beauty 001: Perky Ponytail

Hey friends,

Where my ponytail people at? Not sure about you, but I am such a roll-out-of-bed person. Back in college when my "early" class used to be at 9:10am (haha) I might wake up at 8:30am and spend time in the bathroom doing my hair and makeup for the day. I used to love doing my hair with different styles, but speed and functionality have definitely taken over.

Now in the real world of early morning 5:00am workouts and 7:30am job start times, I have three hairstyles that are my go-to's. That's right. Three.

One is down, one is up, and the other is a ponytail (which is my fancy hairstyle). Below I'll show you how I do my perky ponytails for the days I'm feeling fancy.

FUNCTIONALITY

I cannot tell you how much I love function and efficiency. Not only do I have to use those characteristics in my job, but I seriously think I was born with an appreciation of organization and ease. So when it comes to my presentation, I'm all about quick and functional ways to get ready and still look professional.

Now whether I'm able to do that every day or not is a different story, but when I'm feeling extra fancy or have a big presentation or meeting, I like to try and dress it up just a touch. And the easiest way for me to do that is with a put-together hairstyle.

PONYTAILS

Here's a start to finish step-by-step guide of how I do my ponytails.

This is my hair when I wake up in the morning. I usually shower at night and let it air dry. Morning hair is usually somewhat frizzy with flat roots.

This is my hair immediately after I curl it using a “straight end” style. This means that I start the curl in the middle of the hair section, but leave the ends out of the curling iron so they stay somewhat straight. I find that this style comes off as a bit more playful and edgy than soft and feminine, which I like in my ponytails. I usually let the curls set by leaving them in their place, spraying them, and waiting for my whole head to cool.

After brushing out my curls then I tease my roots. Before this I’ll usually spray a root boost or hairspray near the roots before backcombing. I feel that it adds a bit of volume compared to a style without teasing.

Next I put my hair into a mid-level ponytail. I like this style because I can usually put a ball cap on over it and don’t have to adjust my ponytail height to fit through the hole. As you can see, the teasing added some nice volume on top. I keep my ponytails pretty tight as I find this helps keep the volume on the top of my head throughout the day.

Then I take the top 1/3rd of my ponytail and tease that. After this I’ll tease the bottom 2/3rds. This next trick is where the magic happens!

I use scüni jaw clips because I found they’re the perfect size for my hair type (they're not sponsoring me, I legit buy and use these on my own). I got these at my local Target. There are some other clips that are just a tad bit smaller and more square which may work better for fine or thin hair. Additionally, I think that same brand has some square ones that are just a tad bigger than these scüni clips.

I just want to make sound effects like "meep meep!" each time I open and close these guys XD. I also love that these are no-slip grips, as I find they stay in place more. I like using the brown ones since they match my hair tone best.

Seriously you can’t skip this step! It’s where the magic happens. What do I do with these awesome little buggers? Well...

Remember the top 1/3rd of the teased ponytail? I put one clip directly under that as close to the base/hairband as possible.  Then I take a second clip and clip up the bottom 2/3rds of the ponytail for a total of two clips in my ponytail.

A LITTLE HACK GOES A LONG WAY

Check out the difference between these two ponytails. The only difference is some teasing and clips, no extensions required!

I’m someone who loves a good beauty hack. Who doesn’t love a quick easy trick to add a little oomph, am I right? And this is one of those hacks that definitely makes a difference in how I feel about my ponytails. I feel a bit edgier and friskier, which I need on the days where I know a meeting might get contentious. It’s like my own personal powersuit, but much more comfortable ;)

What are some of your go-to beauty hacks? I’d love to hear all about them! Feel free to comment below :)

Love,
